I was strolling along Iffley Road the other week and came across a set of shelves with a note on saying ‘free to take’. I had been thinking about buying a shoe rack and thought this road side freebie would be perfect with a lick of paint. I’m always looking for ways to jazz up my rented house.
I had recently bought some new Annie Sloan paint at the Magdalen Market (Paris Grey – courtesy of the Annie Sloan shop on Cowley Road) and decided to use the chalk paint to jazz it up a little. Here’s what I did:
Step 1: I put down an old sheet and a bin bag to catch any drops of paint. Got my brush and paints ready and then gave the shelves a clean.
Step 2: The surface was smooth and ready to paint, so I basically got cracking and started to apply the paint to the shelves. That’s what I love about Annie Sloan you can just get painting without a primer. You can mix Annie Sloan colours but I just used the one. I used a normal paint brush (from Wilkinsons) but if you’re serious about your chalk painting you might want to pick up one of the round brushes. I might invest in that next.
I went with the grain of the wood and also blended in a little but with a normal paint brush it’s quite hard. I started from the top of the shelves, just in case any drips spoiled the paint below.
Step 3: Leave to dry. I left the shelves overnight but it was dry by the evening.
Step 4: I did another coat just to make sure the colour popped and go over any bits I’d missed but this is not vital
Step 5: Waxing. You can buy a fancy wax brush but I just used an old white vest top. Don’t choose anything with bits of fibre that might come off or is a strong colour e.g red. When applying, I dunked the cloth in the wax to get a blob and then applied in a circular motion. It kind of looks like the paint is wet or getting duller (see below) but it soon settles down. I really enjoyed this bit.
Step 6: leave to settle and you’re done!!
They might not be the most snazzy of shoe racks but it matches other colours in my house and brightens up a dull corner. Living in rented a rented house, it’s hard to find ways to add your style and personality but little things like this can help add some interest.
